On Her Way Out

This story written by Crystal Phillips, a Compassion Boston Bible Worker.

On Thursday, I got on the bus headed to follow up on a lead I had yet to find home. As I got closer to my destination, I paid extra close attention to the stops so that I’d get off at the right place. I noticed that we were stopping places that weren’t listed on the app that I use to get me around. I looked out the window just as we passed the building that I needed to go to. Luckily, someone had pushed the button to get off at the next stop, so I got off there, too.

I was able to bypass the apartment buzzer and followed someone into the building. When I knocked on the door, Dorlene answered! I introduced myself, showed her the card that she had mailed in and handed her the first Bible study.

Before I could say anything else, she said, “I know you want to come in, but I’m on my way out. Let me see when my next day off is.” She invited me in while she looked at her calendar. We picked an upcoming Monday to study and I headed back out the door to the elevator. As I waited for the elevator, she came out of her apartment again with a mini can of pop and said, “Here you go, it’s hot outside.”

The Holy Spirit was truly doing all the work in that entire interaction. He knew that Dorlene was on her way out, so he kept me aware on the bus so that I would get off by the building. He was stirring her heart, putting the desire to get to know God more deeply in her heart.

I can’t wait to study with Dorlene next week!
